EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A man who allegedly robbed an East St. Louis gas station called police for help after fleeing the scene.

Brandon Cotton, of Florissant, allegedly robbed a BP gas station in East St. Louis around 9:00 a.m. Sunday. Surveillance video showed him allegedly pointing a gun at the clerk, who filled a bag with cash before Cotton allegedly slapped the employee on the behind.

Detective Ronald McClellan was across the street at the East St. Louis Police station. He spotted Cotton behind the gas station.

“He tripped and fell and dropped some of the money on the ground and he was picking it up and putting it into a bag,” said McClellan.

McClellan said he spotted a gun on Cotton and feared for his life.  He then fired at Cotton twice but missed.  Cotton then drove off, crashing his car, but kept going until he reached St. Louis.

The story then took a weird turn.

“He telephoned police and said someone was shooting at him in East St. Louis,” McClellan said.

Cotton had a warrant for his arrest in Florissant for a different offense. He is currently facing robbery charges.
