(KMOV.com) – The chief of the Columbia, Illinois police department has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a domestic incident.

Police Chief Joe Edwards is not to “act as an officer or chief,” according to Columbia’s Mayor Kevin Hutchison. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the domestic matter.

Hutchison says the issue being investigated stems from an ongoing child custody dispute with his estranged wife.

Deputy Chief of Police Jerry Paul will serve as acting chief.
