FLORISSANT, Mo (KMOV.com) -- Metropolitan Sewer District crews are working to repair a sewer main break that resulted in sewage entering Coldwater Creek.

The break in question happened near 2351 Bramble Lane in Florissant, and was discovered Wednesday by an MSD contractor.

The source of the break hasn’t been determined, but officials believe the heavy rainfall and historic flooding in December of last year contributed to a surface cave-in, which caused the soil to give way and the pipe to roll into the creek.

Officials estimate more than 50,000 gallons of sewage entered the creek, affecting approximately 200 feet of the waterway.

There are warning signs posted in the area and temporary pumping apparatus has been deployed .

MSD says there is no immediate threat to public health or safety, residents are encouraged to avoid contact with the affected section of the creek. If anyone comes into contact with the contaminated soap and water, they are urged to immediately wash with soap and water.
