MoDOT speaks out after one inch of snow keeps commuters on roads for hours

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Many are wondering if the hours-long commutes could have been avoided with the help from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) after the light snow fall.

Drivers had to deal with massive backups and dangerous conditions due to less than an inch of snow as they were driving home.

Officials reported more than 20 accidents occurred on the roads. MoDOT officials said they could have done nothing differently to prepare for the snow.

Arias Prapaisilp, assistance maintenance engineer, said, “We did not get a lot of snow for sure, but people are just driving too fast for conditions. They just need to slow down.”

MoDOT says they did not pre-treat the roads because refreezing could have caused more problems for drivers.

Wednesday night, MoDOT said their staff would continue to clear and treat roads.

“Our crews have been out there. We have done all we can. And the drivers themselves have to take some responsibility,” said Prapaisilp.
