ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Many drivers saw their drive time doubled or tripled thanks in part to a blustery snowfall during the Tuesday morning rush. For those that checked MoDOT’s Gateway Guide traffic map, they only saw a blank screen.

MoDOT has an extensive network of traffic cameras and road sensors that tell them what's happening on the roads and that info can be checked on its traffic mapping site. But apparently demand was so high during the snowy morning rush that it bogged down the system.

"Apparently during high demand we can have some difficulties with people getting in," Mark Croarkin, MoDOT district maintenance engineer, said.

News 4 told MoDOT Croarkin about the difficulties some had with the website and pointed out situations like this morning's commute is when drivers need it most.

"That is when people need to see it, but we didn’t even know we were having a problem till after and not everybody had a problem," Croarkin said.

MoDOT’s traffic map shows locations of accidents, traffic speeds and has many cameras to give drivers a real time view of traffic before they leave the house. But on this day, some missed out on those features.

"We are looking into it further you know the only reports of problems we had was from our Twitter account and people like yourself calling to let us know," Croarkin said.

If MoDOT discovers a glitch with their software or the need to increase the capacity of the server for their mapping site, News 4 will let you know.

In the meantime, the KMOV traffic app for phones or can be downloaded in app stores.
