HAZELWOOD, Mo (KMOV.com) –The teacher’s union in Hazelwood says the district is planning to cut 28 teachers.

The union says the district wants to get rid of band and orchestra classes in its elementary schools. Nineteen of the district’s physical education teachers could also lose their jobs. Custodians could also be targeted and field trips could be eliminated.

"It makes me feel sad that they have to do that," said Cole Gipson, a student in the district. His mother, Nicole, is also disappointed. "Hazelwood has had one of the best music programs around which is why we decided to stay in the public school district," she said. "As opposed to go private."

According to officials, the cut will begin during the 2016-2017 school year. Officials say the school board made the decision based on a $12.7 million deficit.

The district says the cuts will only solve half of the problem and will still be $6 million in the red.
