ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A St. Louis man has been convicted of second-degree murder for his involvement in a home invasion that happened in the Bevo neighborhood.

Cortez McClinton, 35, and Terrell Johnson were both armed with guns and wearing masks when they stormed into a South City home in June 2014. At the doorway of the home, Johnson held a 17-year- old girl at gunpoint during the robbery attempt, police said.

The girl’s father was inside the home during the invasion and to defend his family he pulled out a gun and fired shots at McClinton and Johnson, killing Johnson and injuring McClinton.

“This was a horrific event for the family to have grown men grabbing their 17-year-old daughter, armed with mask around their face, resulting in someone dying on their living room floor,” said Assistant Circuit Attorney Jeffrey Ernst, who tried the case against McClinton.

McClinton was found guilty of second-degree murder because his actions contributed to a friend’s death, officials said. His criminal record is lengthy, including several felony charges. In 2010, he was charged with murder after a man was killed on Minnesota Avenue, but prosecutors were forced to drop those charges because of a lack of witness cooperation.

Now that McClinton is going to prison, officials hope witnesses will cooperate.

“It is an opportunity to come forward and share with police information they may have,” said Ernst.

McClinton will be sentenced in March. The second-degree murder charge carries a sentence of 10 years to life in prison.
