Balcony, float collapse during Mardi Gras celebration

( – A balcony and float collapsed during Mardi Gras celebrations in St. Louis.

Five people were injured when a balcony collapsed around 4:45 p.m. at 10th and Lami in Soulard. The injuries the victims sustained are not life threatening, but two people were rushed to the hospital. They are expected to survive.

"They were on the second floor of the balcony which gave way from the building, bringing them down to the first floor," said Captain Gregg Favre of the St. Louis Police Department. "They were certainly partaking in the celebrations down here, but we don't think that necessarily caused the collapse itself."

Earlier in the day, a float also collapsed as it was making its way along the parade route at Broadway and Chouteau. People were on the float at the time of the collapse, but no injuries were reported.
