ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Forty students were taken to local St. Louis hospitals after falling ill due to a gas leak.

The smell of gas was detected at Ames Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School, located at 2900 Hadley Street, around 12:30 Friday. 350 students were evacuated and 40 were loaded onto buses and taken to be examined at a local hospital for precautionary reasons.

Laclede Gas said that they found no gas readings inside the elementary school at about 1 p.m.

"We have instruments that can pick up hazardous odors. we didn't read anything at the school. that doesn't mean it didn't happen it might have disappeared before we were able to get our measurement.," says St. Louis Fire Captain Garon Mosby.

Classes later resumed.
