ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A west St. Louis County High School is changing how most people think of a cheerleader.
The Lafayette High School Sparkle Squad is a team of special needs students and varsity cheerleaders.
Team captain and senior Kaitlyn Wylie came up with the idea for the Sparkle Squad through her volunteer work at the children’s hospital.
“I started working more at camps with kids with special needs and they told me they have their own special needs basketball team and soccer them, and I thought we don’t have any of that. So, I wanted to bring something I love to them too,” Wylie said.
The idea for the squad came from an organization called the Sparkle Effect, which helps students create school-based cheerleading and dance teams that bring together students with and without disabilities.
