BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A Fairview Heights church youth choir director is accused of sexually assaulting children.

Dennis Theurer, 66, led the children's choir at Edgemont Bible Church for years, police say. Theurer is charged with two counts of predatory sexual assault.

According to authorities, Theurer knew one of his victims over a five-year period. The incidents started in 2011 and ended in early February.

Authorities say Theurer resigned from his position as elder and youth choir director in mid-January.

Doug White, Pastor for Edgemont Bible Church says he could not be more disappointed with the former elder.

"We are all brokenhearted about this. This is a sucker punch. It came out of nowhere. It's just terribly painful," said White.

White says both incidents did not happen on church grounds.

Police do not believe there are any other victims.
