Experts recommend early screenings for smokers be covered

Posted: Updated:

( – New government guidelines are calling for lung screenings of some smokers to be covered.

The new guidelines recommend the cost of a low dose CT scan for those 55-77-years old that have a history of smoking be covered. The goal is to catch lung cancer early.

SSM Health is seeing a jump in lung cancer screenings in the St. Louis area as a result.

“What this means for patients is if they have a history of smoking or long-term smoking, get screened early to see if they qualify for treatment early in the disease process rather than later in the disease process,” said Rajiv Patel with SSM DePaul Hospital.

“Once you do the screening, if it comes back normal, you come back in a year. If they do find nodules, we’ll check up with you in three to six to nine months depending on what they find,” said Cindy Broder with DePaul.

To see if you qualify, experts recommend you take a survey. You can do so by clicking here.
