Lincoln County fire marshal among those calling for barriers on Highway 61

Local residents in St. Charles and Lincoln County are not the only ones calling for barriers to be put up along a dangerous stretch of Highway 61 between Wentzville and Troy.  A fire marshal says it is very necessary due to the accidents that have taken place.

A woman and her two children died in a cross-over accident last week.  A big part of the problem is the growth the area has seen over the last several years.

“The latest statistics are 47,000 vehicles a day are traveling (Highway) 61 between Wentzville and Troy.  That’s a lot of traffic.  And that’s doing nothing but growing,” Lincoln County Fire Marshal Barry Nuss said.

This could take a while for MoDot to enact.  Cable barriers are 40 percent cheaper than concrete but they’re still fairly expensive.  The entire project could cost over $2 million.  So until the day it does occur, Nuss says the responsibility falls on the drivers to do their part.

“The biggest part of it is people need to do what they need to do to keep themselves safe.  Not everything can be accomplished by highway safety components.  A lot of it does come down to our drivers,” Nuss said.

There’s an online petition calling for barriers along this stretch of Highway 61 that has received thousands of signatures.
