ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

St. Peters city leaders say they need help to fix flooding problems.

Recently, rising water from Dardenne Creek flooded I-70 and the surrounding area.

Neighbors also hope help is headed their way.

“Dardenne Creek came up pretty fast, actually it was a month ago today,” Denise Koenig, a neighbor, said.

Koenig's family has lived in St. Peters for 30 years.

“I've raised my children here,” Koenig said. “It’s a great neighborhood, 11 great neighbors. Peaceful, quiet, out of the way.”

But she's never seen anything like the flooding that happened just days after Christmas.

“We've had sewer backups in the past, but the creek has never come in my basement window,” Koenig said.

News 4 captured video of water from Dardenne Creek topping I-70. One month later, her neighborhood is still dealing with the aftermath

“It’s kind of scary,” Koenig said. “I hope that something can be done.”

The flood waters shutdown the interstate for two days -- stopping commerce.

“This has happened in the past, so this is something we need to do,” Rocky Reitmeyer, St. Peters Ward 1 Alderman, said.

That's why St. Peters city leaders are looking for ways to prevent flooding like this from happening in the future.

“What I want to see is for the MoDOT and Corps of Engineers to give us some monetary support and engineering support,” Reitmeyer said.

Alderman Reitmeyer is proposing the resolution.

“We need to get help. We need to get support,” Reitmeyer said. “It’s a little bigger than the city of St. Peters can do.

It’s a problem neighbors like Koenig hope that can be fixed.

“I hope that they can do something about it because it’s not something you ever want to deal with again,” Koenig said.
