Radiation found away from West Lake Landfill

BRIDGETON (KMOV.com) -

Tests conducted late in 2015 show some radiation contamination outside of the West Lake Landfill, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said.

The DNR said it the levels are not a threat to those who live nearby, but also said more tests are pending.

Many nearby residents have said they are skeptical about the conclusion that radioactive waste at the landfill is not harmful to the public health and are worried an underground fire at the nearby Bridgeton Landfill will meet the radioactive waste.

Republic Services, which owns the Bridgeton Landfill, later released a statement:

"We agree with the MDNR, DHSS, and EPA that the screening levels do not identify any areas of health and safety concern. The levels should reassure those who rely on science and data to calibrate their concern. They are unlikely to be much solace those who do not."
