ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A preliminary investigation indicated that unattended cooking is to blame for a two-alarm fire at a north St. Louis church early Wednesday morning, according fire officials.

Firefighters were called to the St. Louis Metropolitan Church of Christ, located in the 6070 block of West Florissant, shortly after 2 a.m.

Heavy smoke inside the building forced firefighters to fight the blaze from the outside.

"There was a fire that out due to a pot of water, I believe that was connected to some wire. I don't know if it was on a hot plate of some kind," said Pastor Christopher Mitchell.

Homes on both sides of the church had to be evacuated for safety reasons while firefighters worked to put out the flames.

Nobody was inside the church at the time of the blaze.

"Surreal, disconcerting and discouraging. You know. like you just couldn't believe it that was happening," said Mitchell.

No injuries were reported.
