Disabled veteran ripped off by St. Charles contractor

ST. CHARLES (KMOV.com) – The City of St. Charles is warning about a construction company that ripped off a disabled veteran.

Kenneth Holtz is a disabled veteran and says he hired a local contractor to do some work on his mobile home, but the contractor left halfway through after tearing Holtz’s home apart. Holtz says he paid $17,000 for the material and labor.

“As soon as he found out the city inspector had been by the house, he skedaddled. Won’t return phone calls,” said Holtz.

Holtz says he does not have a toilet, lights, heat, or running water.

Authorities say several local contractors are providing their services for free help, like Tim Branham, owner of Branham Electric.

Branham said, “There is so much he doesn’t have. Everything he had has been hauled off to the dump and they left him sitting in here in a wheelchair with nothing.”

According to authorities, Lowe's is also donating flooring, which Marc's Installation in St. Peters will install.

The city says they will not allow Holtz to live in his home until repairs are made. Holtz is staying with a neighbor temporarily.
