Emergency workers work together to save trapped colt

Posted: Updated:
WILDWOOD, Mo (KMOV.com) -

With winter weather in full swing, the season for ice rescues is upon us. But it's not just people that end up in dangerous situations. Animals can wander out onto the ice and get into big trouble.

In a video shot by the Metro West Fire Protection District, we can see a tremendous effort from rescuers to save a young horse in danger.

The firefighters, along with MERS Large Animal Rescue fought to save an 18-month-old colt named Kid.

Kid fell through the ice on a pond in Wildwood about 40 feet from shore.

The firefighters had just practiced water rescue earlier in the day, and working with MERS, were able to pull Kid out of the pond.

Despite suffering hypothermia and exhaustion, the colt is recovering well.
