Community policing among topics discussed at officer training this week

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – More than 50 police departments will come together starting Tuesday for a chance to learn more about community policing.

The Los Angeles Police Department will send two of their top guys to St. Louis to train officers during a two-day event at St. Louis University. Officers from Missouri and Illinois will be trained on strategies they can use to rebuild the public’s trust.

The goal of the event is to strengthen the relationship between police and the community.

Deputy Chief William Murphy will address the nationwide outcry for police reform, while Captain Martin Baeza talks about how to reduce crime. Captain Baeza commands Los Angeles’ Hollenbeck District, a neighborhood with a lot of gang activity which has seen a significant decrease in murder.

Community leaders and civic groups are invited to attend the training which will begin at 7:30 a.m.
