GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A Granite City man died after falling through a frozen pond while flying drones with his son.

According to police, Mark A. Miller, 54, was flying drones with his 11-year-old son when one of the drones crashed onto a frozen pond near Low Water Dam on Chouteau Island in Madison. Miller told his son to stay in the car while he went to retrieve the drone. While attempting to get the drone, Miller fell through the ice and drowned.

His son sat in the car for three hours before the car ran out of gas, prompting the boy to seek help. A driver saw the boy walking along West Chain of Rocks Road and picked him up, taking him to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department substation in Mitchell, Illinois.

Police launched an investigation, following footprints that ended at a hole in the pond. The boy did not witness his father fall through the hole and is now with his mother. Miller and his wife are divorced.

Miller’s body was recovered.
