Fire department evacuates buildings after gas leak in south St. Louis

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – Firefighters evacuated five buildings, including 20 apartment units, after a natural gas leak occurred around 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

The buildings were located in the 3900 block of Jamieson near Lindenwood Park. Laclede Gas and the St. Louis Fire Department responded to the scene. Streets were closed in the area during the evacuation.

"Smelling that much gas in the area (makes) you concerned about fire hazard or explosion hazard," said Rodney Muirhead, a resident in the apartments. "The firemen were knocking on the door saying we had to evacuate the premises and the block area."

Officials found a crack in one of the pipes, but the cause is still unknown.

"If we have anywhere near a level that would be dangerous or approaching an explosive level, it's time to evacuate those buildings," said Greg Favre of the St. Louis Fire Department. "Five of these buildings met those conditions, certainly not a risk we're willing to take with peoples' properties or lives.

No injuries have been reported.
