ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Charges have been filed against a 50-year-old accused of shooting a man inside a home prior to shots being exchanged with officers in St. Louis Saturday morning.

According to authorities, three officers were approached by Willie Dennis, of the 4200 block of Maffitt, outside a home in the 5100 block of Cates Avenue around 12:40 a.m. Shortly after meeting with Dennis, a second man exited the house and began shooting.

In fear for their safety, officers returned gunfire at the 52-year-old who was shooting towards Dennis.

The 52-year-old then took refuge inside the home, but later surrendered to officers. He was then transported to the hospital where he was treated for multiple gunshot wounds and listed in stable condition.

An investigation revealed Dennis entered the home and shot the 52-year-old while he was sleeping.

Dennis was taken into custody and charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and third-degree assault. His cash-only bond was set at $50,000.

No officers were injured during the incident.

All three officers were placed on administrative leave, per department policy. One is a 42-year-old officer with 18 years’ experience, another is a 29-year-old man with 5 years’ service and the third is a 27-year-old man with 2 years’ service.

Additionally, police found four guns on the property.
