Police: Criminals targeting flood victims in Pacific

Police are warning residents of Pacific that thieves are targeting flood victims.

Authorities believe the culprits are stealing anything of value inside flooded out houses that the water didn’t destroy.

“My husband came back to the house around midnight and someone had stolen my lawn mower that was not even near the scrap pile,” said victim Genevieve Elias.

The Elias family is receiving clean up from Americorps volunteers, who are also helping other homes and businesses. Criminals are going after items of value that survived the flood.

“We’ve had where they try to loot and steal anything they can out in the yards or what they believe is trash,” said Det. Amanda Meyer.

Officers caught one burglar who stole tools being used to repair a home, police said. Charges are still pending. Cleanup and repairs could take weeks. Police have stepped up patrols after dark an in effort to catch the thieves.
