DE SOTO, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The De Soto Police Department told residents to tell police what they thought about the job the department was doing, and not to hold back. Some of the results of the online survey were expected -- some were not.

Two things to know about the police chief in De Soto: he was just promoted to the position last year, so he wanted to see where the department stood and he's a big believer in using social media to solve crime and to have a two-way form of communication with citizens.

So he conducted a poll on Facebook and found that 44.5 percent of residents consider drugs to be a "big" problem. The majority of those taking the poll said the police officers are very professional. Thirty-two percent said when they called an officer, the officer was fully helpful and responsive. But the survey also found that citizens want officers to do things that get them more involved and more visible in the community.

"You know one of the things that they had talked about in the survey is that they wanted to see more officers walking out on the street, you know in the morning times on our main street where businesses are,” Chief Rick Draper said. “A lot of runners run early in the morning. That's something we can take care of right away."

Some of the comments gave the chief the chance to explain the ways De Soto police are part of a drug task force and regional SWAT team, so residents know everything the department does.

But the survey was another way the chief is using social media to let residents know police are listening and responding to the needs and concerns of the taxpayers who pay their salaries.
