UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police have arrested the suspect they say is responsible for the death of a 70-year-old man in his home at the 7100 block of Amherst in University City.

Police responded to the residence for a call to check the welfare of August Lombardo. After no response, police say a coworker used a key that was supplied by Lombardo to enter the home. The coworker last spoke to the victim on Tuesday night.

Authorities later arrested Gregory Hayes, 51, as the alleged suspect responsible for the victim's death. Investigators say Hayes knew the victim personally and had been to the victim's home several times with his brother.

Police say that the coworker found the victim inside his bedroom with multiple stab wounds. The possible weapon was recovered at the scene.

According to the probable cause statement, Hayes stole liquor and money from the residence.

Hayes has been charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
