ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center is a place where it is easy to lose hope. It is home for kids who have committed serious crimes.

Their charges range from theft to murder. Some of the kids are as young as 11.

The kids are held at the center while judges decide their futures. Most of the kids will return to the streets of St. Louis.

Members of The 100 Black Men have been holding mentoring sessions at the center.

"We try and give these kids some hope that they can eventually leave these conditions and go into something better," Steve Harmon said.

Harmon is an attorney, retired police officer and member of The 100 Black Men.

"If they don't get help the cycle continues," he said.

The 100 Black Men visit the center each Thursday and discuss a different topic each time.

"Our goal is to give them tools they can use when they get out," Harmon said.

The program started in 2014.

"We've had some success," Harmon said. "We've seen kids get out and do much better."
