Thieves targeting homes hit by flooding in Jefferson County

Posted: Updated:

Several homes that were flooded out along Romaine Creek Road in Jefferson County were recently hit by thieves, homeowners say.

A homeowner told News 4 she left several appliances such as a freezer, two refrigerators, a stove and washer and dryer in the front yard for an appliance company to pick up. The company promised a 50 percent discount for trading in the appliances. The homeowner said the appliances were stolen when she was away from her home for a minutes on Wednesday morning.

“They pulled into the driveway, backed up in the neighbor’s yard and then backed up to them,” said Cherie Ledbetter.

Ledbetter told News 4 eight of her neighbors have also had something stolen from their front yards. She was the only victim to file a report with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

“Now we’re scared about what’s going to happen inside the house,” Ledbetter said.

She said she’s concerned thieves will try to steal copper pipes, so she quickly replaced the flood damaged front door so the house can be locked up while she’s away.
