Police: Man kidnaps girl, forces her into vacant St. Louis home

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A 48-year-old St. Louis man was charged Friday after prosecutors said he forced a girl into a vacant building while she was walking to school.

Court documents say John Billingsley approached a 12-year-old girl in the 3800 block of North 14th Street around 2:45 on January 8. Billingsley reportedly asked her to help him find his cell phone. The girl kept walking, but Billingsley allegedly grabbed her wrist and forced her into a nearby vacant house. The girl was then taken to a room with several mattresses.

The girl was able to free herself and run to the nearby school, where she notified staff.

Billingsley, of the 4900 block of Rosalie Street in St. Louis, is charged with one count of child kidnapping.

Court documents show Billingsley has a lengthy criminal background.

  • In 1986, he was convicted of two counts of assault and sentenced to five years in prison.
  • In 1981, he was convicted of misdemeanor trespassing and sentenced to 30 days confinement.
  • In 1998, he was convicted of distribution of a controlled substance and sentenced to seven years in prison.
  • In 2009, he was convicted of trespassing, stealing, and possession of burglary tools and sentenced to four years in prison when his probation was revoked.
