CENTRAL WEST END (KMOV.com) – In the last week there have been several armed robberies in the Central West End.

On January 7, two women in their 20s were robbed of their wallets at gunpoint while walking along York Avenue from an event just before midnight.

The suspects, believed to be two men in their 30s or 40s, were caught on a surveillance camera.

One of the suspects, who had a beard, mustache and was missing a front tooth, was wearing a Texas sweatshirt in the video. The other suspect was dressed in dark clothes and was wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

A similar robbery took place on January 8 when two men approached a 26-year-old man and demanded his wallet at gunpoint on West Pine Boulevard.

Police said they are working to see if both robberies are connected. The Central West End Security Initiative hopes the surveillance images will help catch the people responsible.

Jim Whyte, Executive Director for the Central West End Security Initiative, said, “It's critical to what we’re trying to do, which is keep down crime and make our community safer, and not just the CWE, but the region.”

Authorities said the Central West End has seen huge success with their security initiative program. The program uses tax money from businesses to pay for cameras, but also for extra lighting and security patrols.

The money also goes towards the reward to catch the men caught on camera for the alleged robberies.

The group is also adding to the CrimeStoppers reward, doubling the amount to $2,000.

Anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers.
