Authorities issue alert as fake IRS call scam hits another St. Louis County community

Posted: Updated:
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Tuesday, authorities are issuing another warning about a scam News 4 has been reporting on for more than a year. People posing as IRS agents are targeting another St. Louis County community.

These crooks are ruthless, and the problem only seems to get worse.  We have warned you about this in the past, now the Florissant police are putting out there own warning.

There have been a large number of calls received by residents of Florissant by people claiming there was an issue with their taxes. The callers are looking for personal information and sometimes demand payment to make the "problems" go away.

The real IRS will never contact you by phone.

The crime has gotten so bad in communities, Missouri lawmakers like Senator Claire McCaskill have pushed for more accountability hoping to stop the problem.

"If someone calls you and says, I'm the IRS, wire me money,' do not do that. Call the FBI office or call the local police," she said.

This warning goes for anyone receiving calls from anyone who claims to be from a government agency asking for money.

Oftentimes these guys will threaten arrest or use other scare tactics to get people to pay.
