Space heater safety tips

Posted: Updated:

ST.LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – As temperatures continue to drop, fire officials are warning people about space heater safety.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, half of all home heating fires happen in December, January and February. From 2007 to 2011, space heaters accounted for a third of home heating fires, and more than 80 percent of home heating deaths.

When using a space heater officials warn people not to place them close to upholstered furniture, clothing or mattresses.  Also, remember to turn off space heaters before leaving the room or going to bed.

Officials suggest keeping a 3-foot “kid free zone” around the space heater.

Another huge component of fire safety is making sure to have working smoke detectors by regularly checking and replacing batteries.
