FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Former Ferguson Mayor Brian Fletcher passed away overnight, according to city officials.

The 56-year-old started the “I Love Ferguson” campaign following the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown. The project sold shirts and other merchandise to raise money to help business that were damaged during the unrest.

Fletcher served as Ferguson’s mayor from 2005 to 2011. He was also elected to the Ferguson City Council last April, and had previously served on the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s Board.

“Words cannot express our sorrow and pain to lose one of the true champions of the City of Ferguson,” said Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III. “During the most difficult time in our city’s history, Brian worked tirelessly and selflessly to bring people together in the spirit of a shared love for our community,” added Knowles. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they grieve the loss of their loved one.”

No details about Fletcher’s death have been released.

Funeral arrangements are currently pending.

We will update this story when more information is known.
