Gov. Jay Nixon lays out plan in response to historic flooding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Governor Jay Nixon laid out a plan Wednesday to help clean up debris from the record rainfall and flooding in 2015.

Officials say the swollen rivers shut down more than 40 roads and highways, killed at least 15 people and may have damaged more than seven thousand structures in Missouri alone.

Governor Jay Nixon visited the Arnold area on January 6 to get a close look at the damage.

Nixon says the Missouri National Guard will handle the clean up effort. He says there is half a million tons of debris spread across the flooded areas.

According to authorities, Nixon has signed an executive order to speed up the Department of Natural Resources process for removing the debris, so home and business owners can assess the damage. Nixon is calling this effort an operational recovery.

Details of the debris pick up times will be released in a few days, authorities say.
