BETHALTO (KMOV.com) – A church in the Metro East is warning their parishioners about unauthorized cameras found inside their church on Christmas Eve, 2015.

Reverend Mark Hofferber says in between busy holiday church services at Zion Lutheran Church, multiple cameras were discovered.

“This is a first for our church, but I’m reminded we live in a sinful dark world. Sometimes even in church we have to deal with sinful things,” said Hofferber who has served the church for nearly two decades.

The church is attached to a school and the church says they were worried there were more cameras.

“We searched immediately the school and the sanctuary and didn’t discover any more cameras,” said Hofferber.

Police say they also conducted multiple searches.

The church says they can not share many details because of the ongoing investigation including where exactly the cameras were found and how many or what they were filming. But the church is doing their best to keep everyone informed.

“We sent out an email to all our preschool and school parents and as soon as charges are officially filed we will have a public meeting,” said Hofferber.

Police say they did arrest a fellow church member, but was released pending charges. It was not someone who worked for the church or the school, according to the Hofferber. But he says the invasion of privacy has hit this congregation hard.

“This has caused great stress on this church, obviously this is difficult situation,” he said.
