Owners of Dirt Cheap saved by sandbags in West Alton learned from previous flood

Posted: Updated:
WEST ALTON (KMOV.com) -

The person who built a sandbag wall around a Dirt Cheap store in West Alton to keep water out said the store owners learned their lesson after a previous flood.

Skyzoom 4 captured video from above showing flood waters surrounding the Dirt Cheap location, but a sandbag wall around the store kept most of the water at bay. The man who built the wall said several feet of water would have been inside the building had the sandbags not been in place. The photos of the store surrounded by sandbags has been shared over and over again on social media.

The man also said the owners learned from a flood in summer 2013, when a few feet of water got into the store.

An expert told News 4 building such a wall could be expensive, but is worth it. A small amount of water did make it past the wall, but it is being pumped out.
