GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- A 3-year-old child was shot while inside his Granite City, Illinois home on January 3.

Neighbors say they heard gunfire just after midnight along Warnock Avenue in unincorporated Granite City.

Madison County Sheriff investigators say an unknown suspect fired three gunshots into the front of a home in the 4700 block of Warnock Avenue around 12:30 a.m.

"Clearly this is a reckless, cowardly act that we're not going to tolerate," said Mike Dixon, Captain of the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Police say that this may have been intended as some sort of message for the family. They don't believe the boy was the intended target.

Investigators say one of the three bullets hit the boy while he was playing on the living room floor as his father and grandparents were also in the room. According to police, the bullet hit the child in the left shoulder.

The child was transported by family members to a local hospital and later released. He will make a full recovery.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department is still looking for the gunman who fired the shots and took off. The department is asking anyone with any information to contact authorities.
