ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – St. Clair County officials are asking people to test their homes for radon since January is 'Radon Action Month.'

According to the Centers for Disease Control, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

The colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas kills 21,000 people each from radon-induced lung cancer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates. The time between exposure and a cancer diagnosis may be several years, and not everyone who is exposed to radon will get lung cancer, the St. Clair County Health Department said.

The natural decay of uranium causes radon radioactive particles to be produced.

To find out if you have radon in your home there are many test kits available at hardware stores.
