ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The state of emergency in St. Louis County, in place since Sunday, was lifted Friday by county officials.

In a release, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger said, “Floodwater has receded significantly, Interstates 44 and 55 have reopened and many residents who had been evacuated earlier this week are returning to their homes.”

Stenger toured the region by helicopter, making the assessment in consultation with first responders that the state of emergency could be lifted.

Friday the Meramec River was below flood stage in many areas and is expected to recede below flood stage across the county by Saturday.

However, Stenger urged residents to be careful as they return to previously flooded areas. The county is offering interest-free loans to businesses that were damaged in the flooding. Anyone looking to secure one should call (314) 615-7692.
