ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The City of Alton is preparing for the Mississippi River to crest.

The water level is now at 35.7 feet, and crews are prepared to man the pumps until the water recedes. The river was expected to crest around 12 p.m. Thursday.

Until further notice, Route 367 southbound is closed. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the roadway is closed between the Clark Bridge and the Missouri River Bridge. Officials said they will reassess the closure when there is no longer any water on the roadway between Route 94 and Missouri Road.

Drivers are advised not to drive through water on the roadways because the condition of the road underneath is unknown.

The City of Alton is also asking individuals not to remove barricades.
