Using Uber on NYE? Pay attention to post-party prices

With New Year’s Eve upon us and people all over the region making their plans for one of the biggest party nights of the year, securing safe transportation should be at the top of the list.

With the arrival of ridesharing service Uber in St. Louis, many revelers will turn to their phones as the party winds down to summon a car for the trip home.

However, riders should be aware of Uber’s surge pricing system, as they will likely have to deal with cost fluctuations Thursday night.

During times of high demand for their service (like New Year’s Eve), when there are not enough drivers on duty, fares increase via algorithm. The increase is designed to incentivize more drivers to come on duty. Once the demand slows or the amount of drivers increases enough to meet the high demand, the prices normalize.

Uber says riders will be notified of fares are increased due to a pricing surge and are asked to confirm and accept the increased fares before the ride so they won’t be caught off guard. They can also decide to wait and get a notification when the prices drop.

If they want to avoid surge pricing, New Year’s Eve partiers are encouraged to get to their destinations early and leave right after the ball drops. Uber expects the biggest demand (and priciest fares) between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.

The company also released some additional tips for best using the service tonight:

Split your fare: Use fare split if you’re rolling with the whole party or take uberPOOL if it’s just you and one friend and it’s available in your city.

Confirm your driver: You wouldn’t want to walk into the wrong party, so make sure you don’t walk into the wrong car. Confirm your driver’s car model and license plate in the app before you hop in your ride. And if you’re still not sure, you can always text or call your driver.

Keep your number masked: If you can’t find your driver or want to share more pickup information, call or text through the app—your number will always stay anonymous.

Send your status: Let your friends count down to the moment you arrive. Send trip details—which includes your estimated time of arrival as well as your driver’s first name and vehicle information—to friends or family directly through the app.

Make a resolution: Resolve to be considerate to your driver and follow our Code of Conduct so that everyone can enjoy the spirit of the season and every ride meets our standards for respect and common courtesy.

Contact support: If you drop the ball and leave one of your items in your ride, get in contact with your driver directly.

Host a better bash: Throwing the party? Tell your guests to leave the keys at home by purchasing Uber rides for them in advance. For every ride purchased through UberEVENTS + MADD, Uber will donate $10 to MADD to support their important work to end drunk driving and aid victims and survivors. You arrange how, when, and where your guests ride—so they can focus on having the best time. Available in the U.S. only.
