Police search for thieves who stole Granite City Police unmarked squad car

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – Police are actively searching for the thieves who stole a Granite City Police officer’s unmarked squad car.

The officer was traveling west on North Street waiting to turn onto Illinois Route 3 when he saw a van in traffic that didn’t move when the cars around it did.

The officer excited his car, a 2014 Ford Fusion, and saw a driver slumped over the wheel. As the officer tried to wake the driver, he heard his squad car backing up from its position behind the minivan. The thief struck the officer with the car before fleeing onto Illinois Route 3 with the driver of the minivan. The officer was treated for minor injuries.

Inside the squad car were the officer's personal items as well as police equipment including firearms, a bulletproof vest, a badge, and a radio.

At 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, St. Louis County Police located the vehicle in the 4600 block of Wallington Court in St. Louis. The car was unoccupied and towed for processing, and some of the items were recovered.

However, the firearms and equipment are still missing from the vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Granite City Police at 618-877-6111. CrimeStoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the thieves, as well as up $1,000 for information that leads to the recovery of the stolen items.
