EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- The East St. Louis city manager who got the job after a failed mayoral re-election bid has been fired.

Two City Council members and the woman who defeated Alvin Parks Jr. in April voted Monday to fire him as the city struggles with a nearly $6 million budget shortfall.

Longtime city employee Edith Moore was named interim city manager.

Parks was hired in late August after a 3-2 council vote. He earned $100,000 annually, twice what he earned as mayor before voters instead selected Emeka Jackson-Hicks.

Police and firefighter pension funds in East St. Louis are suing the cash-strapped city over millions in missed payments. The city has also laid off eight police officers and 10 other employees after shelving plans to also cut several firefighter jobs.
