Granite City U.S Steel workers expect layoffs soon

Posted: Updated:

( – In just a few days, many U.S Steel workers are expected to be laid off.

The corporation is consolidating its North American flat-rolled operation which will temporarily result in idle operations in Granite City.

“At Granite City Steel, I’d rather see them working, of course,” said Greg Shemwall who lives in Granite City. “Somehow, they’ll line something out if its contract troubles or disputes. They need to get it in line because we need the business here.”

Shemwall says he knows this more than anyone. He lives in Granite and when the layoffs start, he says it could be bad for the community. In an effort to save these jobs, Illinois Congressman Mike Bost pushed for federal legislation to protect Granite City and all steel workers in the U.S from what he called “illegal practices by foreign steel.”

“Basically what the legislation does is it allows our agencies that control the trade in this nation to put tariffs in place,” Bost said. “If these activities occur, they could prove that the nations are putting themselves at an advantage above our workers.”

The projected layoffs will affect about 2,000 employees at the plant.

“We’ve seen it through the years, but somehow they pull through,” Shemwall said. “Hopefully, they will this time.”
