ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com )—Products geared towards women and girls can cost more than the same items made for men and boys, according to a newly released study.

The report from the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs shows that on average female versions of a product cost 70 percent more.

The study compared nearly 800 products with female and male versions across 35 product categories, including toys, accessories, clothing and home health care products.

Products for women cost more 42 percent of the time, and personal care products had the highest price discrepancy. The study also found that women paid 48 percent more than men for essentially the same hair care products.

Despite the recent findings, there is no federal or state law to regulate the gender pricing gap.
