ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

An alleged shoplifter is accused of intentionally hitting a St. Peters police officer with his car.

Darrin Long, 38, is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, receiving stolen property and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Authorities believe Long stole items from the Dillards at Mid Rivers Mall Tuesday night. Two Dillards employees chased after him as he ran to his car in the parking lot, police said.

Police arrived on scene as Long got into his car. Officers ordered him get out of his car but he refused to comply, police said. Long proceeded to put his car in reverse, accelerate and hit an officer before driving away.

The officer suffered minor injuries. Officers later caught Long nearby, police said.  He is being held in the St. Charles County Jail where he is being held on a $75,000 bond.
