Accreditation upgrade will require students to transfer back to Riverview Gardens

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The Riverview Gardens School District could have its accreditation upgraded, but the impact of the upgrade may not be positive for everyone. Should the school district receive an upgrade in accreditation, students who transferred out of the district would need to change schools again.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said Riverview Gardens School District could have their accreditation upgraded as early as this upcoming summer. Should that happen, the 540 students who transferred from the district would be forced to transfer back to the district for the 2016-2017 academic year

When the state of Missouri upheld the Transfer Law in 2013, hundreds of students transferred from the district to schools with higher accreditation. Riverview Gardens School District lost their accreditation in 2007.

In October, Superintendent Scott Spurgeon requested an accreditation change after years of changes to improve the district. Riverview Gardens was dubbed the most improved school district last year.

The request of an accreditation change will be reviewed by the state and a decision could come as early as next month.
