Study: Children in St. Louis metro area highly susceptible to gun injuries

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Children in the St. Louis metro area are highly susceptible to gun injuries, according to a new study from Washington University.

From 2008 to 2013, 398 children were treated for firearm injuries. The majority of the victims lived in St. Louis City and North County. Almost 78 percent of the children were African-American, and nearly 82 percent of the children injured or killed were boys with a median age of 15.

The research also found that 35 percent of the injuries resulted from accidental shootings. Of those accidental shootings, 75 percent of them occurred inside a home.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Martin S. Keller, noted that while the research was focused on the St. Louis metro area, it is a crisis affecting other cities in the United States.

The study’s findings will be published in January in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
