WARRENTON (KMOV.com) –  Warrenton is moving forward with plans to possibly add a second interstate overpass to the town.

According to supporters, the idea has been talked about for years. Supporters say the second overpass installation is a safety and economic development issue. A tax hike would also be needed.

If the project goes forward, the second overpass would be added where Route MM meets Interstate 70, which is two miles west of the town’s current and only overpass.

In the spring of 2015, the overpass was shut down after an anhydrous ammonia leak. Drivers and emergency vehicles had to drive four miles to the east or five miles to the west to cross over I-70, according to officials.

Many people agree the overpass is needed for safety, the city is looking at the economic impact a new overpass would have on the area.

“Right now, we’re rather maxed out with infrastructure that we have. So, we have to decide where we’re going in the future,” said Karen Casserly, Board of Aldermen President for Warrenton.

According to officials, Warren County is one of the fastest-growing areas in the state of Missouri.

“We have to make the community some place people want to come and live and work and buy things in our town,” said Casserly.

MoDOT says it does not have any money for the project. The new overpass would cost $15 million, but that price is an early estimate. Funding is still to be determined.

Gary Auch, Alderman Ward II for the City of Warrenton said, “You have to be looking with perspective, not this year or next year, but have to have five or ten years down the road, which is what we’re doing with the long range plan is look farther down the road.”
