ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A group of contractors are accused of ripping off residents throughout St. Charles County, and police are now sending out a warning.

Authorities said the scammers are cruising through county neighborhoods, offering various homeowners deals on asphalt with intentions to swindle them.

"The asphalt contractor is there to defraud them...there's no doubt what's going on..." said St. Charles Police Capt. David Tiefenbrunn.

The St. Charles County Police Department said it has received several reports about the scam and urge residents who notice any fraudulent activity in their neighborhoods to contact police.

The department said the contractors' service truck is marked with a company name, Asphalt Road Crew. However, the truck does not have a company address or phone number -- an apparent red flag.

Richard Dinkela, the owner of Creve Couer Paving, said scammers who go door-to-door usually are personable and appealing. They typically target elderly homeowners and offer "super deals" that usually skyrocket.

"Then they use intimidation factors to get victims to comply, and immediately leave the scene and cash checks," said Dinkela. "Sometimes they won't even complete the work..."
