Tax cheats: How bad of a problem is tax identity theft

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) - News 4 heard from dozens of viewers who had their identities stolen and fraudsters filed a fake tax return with their names and Social Security numbers.

Many of the victims suspected the 2013 breach at Anthem Healthcare Breach put their personal information in jeopardy.

News 4’s Chris Nagus traveled to Washington D.C. in March to question the head of the IRS about the possible connection.

No matter what the cause, the St. Louis area was hit harder than most in the past year by identity theft.

The Federal Trade Commission, which tracks identity theft, ranked the St. Louis Metro as third in the country for Identity theft. In 2014, St. Louis was ranked down at 100 on the list.
